Asia-Pacific nations tackle energy resilience
In a first-of-its-kind summit, top level decision-makers from around Asia Pacific are gathering in Wellington on 16-17
March 2016 to discuss Delivering Resilient Energy Infrastructure.
Co-hosted by the BusinessNZ Energy Council and the World Energy Council, the event will allow decision-makers from
business and governments to share ideas, experiences and resources on resilience - how to plan and pay for it, manage
risks, collaborate and jointly find solutions.
“There is a dawning realisation of just how important resilience is,” BusinessNZ Energy Council chair David Caygill
said.
“It’s about more than weather. Resilience is a state of preparedness for all sorts of unexpected shocks and stresses
including cyber-attacks and social activism.
“Themes to be discussed include emerging technologies, transport and smart cities. The summit will help develop a shared
understanding of the risks and challenges presented by climate change, emerging technologies, extreme weather events,
cyber security and the energy-water-food connection.
“The fact that this summit is drawing Ministers, CEOs, policy makers, infrastructure operators and owners and technology
providers from nations around the region, demonstrates recognition of how important resilience is.
“New Zealand is leading the regional conversation, but all countries at different stages of development can learn from
each other – for example, some developing countries are in a position to be new technology testbeds. It’s time to
jointly explore how to future-proof energy systems, challenge ideas, build resilience and prepare for the new normal.”
