Proudly Kiwi Made

Russell McVeagh congratulates Powershop, a subsidiary of Meridian Energy, the Wellington based power company on the conclusion of its significant new agreement with UK-based electricity generator and supplier npower (an RWE company).

Led by Monique Greene, General Counsel from Powershop, the legal team constructed a deal that will see Powershop commercialise its IP by providing a new retail platform for npower, based on a software as a service model, together with a licence of the Powershop brand to npower. npower is one of the UK's 'Big Six' energy retailers which captures about 10% of the UK's domestic electricity market.

Monique was supported by Tom Maasland, who heads up Russell McVeagh's Auckland Information Communications and Technology team and Senior Associate, Dominic Rowe.

Powershop was established in 2009 and is proudly a New Zealand company. The team at Powershop are focused on making shopping for electricity easy and enjoyable. They have created the tools people need to understand how much power they use, giving them the control to lower their bills. Now just six years later their Wellington headquarters are bursting at the seams, with their Customer Service Centre adding vibrancy to the rural Wairarapa township of Masterton and a thriving frontier in Melbourne, Australia. The UK deal is a natural extension of the entry into the Australian market and will give Powershop the opportunity to sell the technology and know-how its team has developed since 2009.

Also advising on the transaction from a UK perspective was Calum Murray, Head of Commercial Technology at London technology law firm Kemp Little.
