New multi-million dollar pools on track for popular Tekapo Springs
They’re on the home straight – there’s now just 25 days to go until award-winning South Island tourism attraction Tekapo Springs opens three brand-new pools.
After three very busy months of construction, the new pools and aqua play additions to the hugely popular facility are literally taking shape.
The new pools are designed to perfectly complement three existing pools and include an 80sqm kid’s aqua play/spray area, a 130sqm kid’s beach access pool and an 80sqm adults’ pool.
Tekapo Springs’ owner and managing director Karl Burtscher says his team and key contractors have put in a “big effort” to get the pools built in a very short timeframe.
The new adults’ pool is now finished and coloured, and the kids pool and aqua play area is being fibre glassed and will be finished this week.
Behind the scenes, pool plant and automation controls will also be finished this week, landscaping is already well underway, and aqua play features and shade sails will be installed next week. When everything’s finally in place, the new pools and surrounding will finally be commissioned.
“We’ll be thrilled to get to that moment and can’t wait to see the final finished product,” says Karl. “Now the tent’s come off the new adult pool as fibre glassing’s finished, you really can appreciate the magnificent view it will have down Lake Tekapo.
“The new pools open on Boxing Day as planned so we’ve got fingers, toes and everything else crossed for a great weather day as we could be just a little bit busy!”
He says locals have also been “champing at the bit” to get into the complex and try it out for themselves.
“Our loyal locals have been very patient while the work’s been underway so we’re planning on rewarding some of them with a ‘sneak peek’ Locals Day on December 23.
“We’d love members of our local council and VIPs, businesses and tradies who worked on the project from around the Mackenzie area to experience the new pools and we’re sure they’ll be suitably impressed.”
Businesses involved in the pools project include H2O Water Systems from Auckland on the pool plant; High Country Carpentry from Fairlie which did all the building and formwork, Stephen Styles Block and Brick on the block work, Murray Linton Concrete, Reflex Industrial on the fibreglassing, and Damon Smith Electrical and Prolec (Professional Electric) from Christchurch which worked on controls and automation.
The official grand opening of the pools is expected to be some time in February.
Tekapo Springs is a year-round attraction beloved by visitors from all around the globe. The new pool additions – themed ‘High Country Tarns’, each with its own distinctive shade of aqua green – are part of Tekapo Springs’ long-term growth strategy for expanding its aquatic attractions and offering a wider range of water temperatures and features.
The new cooler adult pool will be perfect for increasingly hotter summer days, while the aqua play and spray area for kids will feature water jets, funnels, geysers, spots and more.
The new pools will run through winter, depending on outside weather temperatures.
Tekapo Springs is nestled on the shores of stunning Lake Tekapo, boasting a unique mix of summer and winter recreation and relaxation.
Open 364 days a year, the attraction already includes three existing outdoor hot pools, a steam and sauna facility, an ice rink, water slides, summer and winter tubing, a day spa, café and fully licensed bar.
The company has evolved into a year-round ‘must-do’, on the bucket list of many visitors to the South Island, as well as stamping its mark as an important centrepiece in the Tekapo community.
