Which Kiwi Hairdressers Make the Cut?
Women outspend men 2:1 in the hairdresser’s chair
Auckland, 1 December 2015: The most recent survey looking at Hairdressers, by consumer satisfaction ratings company Canstar Blue has revealed that a portion of Kiwis only seek expert treatment for their hair (27%) when they start noticing split ends.
Women are most likely to notice when their hair is looking slightly worse for wear (32%) and head to the professionals.
But when they do make it in to see their hairdresser they are paying a significant price for their good looks and locks. Kiwis spent an average of $71.25 in their last visit to the hairdresser, with women ($85.06) tending to spend more than twice as much per trip than men ($37.41), says Canstar New Zealand General Manager, Jose George.
“Those in the Manawatu, Aucklanders and people in the Bay of Plenty are spending the most on their hair at $87.95, $77.90 and $77.97 respectively.”
While some may see this as a big price to pay, it’s not too steep if you consider your happiness with the result.
The majority of New Zealanders put quality of the hair service as the number one driver of satisfaction (29%) ahead of price (17%) and advice (17%).
The average number of weeks between visits to the hairdressers is 13, but Gen Ys are going less frequently with 16 weeks between visits, says George.
“Men are more diligent with their hair do, going in for a trim every nine weeks compared to women who go every 15 weeks.”
Women’s (generally) longer hair styles take longer to grow out than men’s who have shorter styles requiring more frequent maintenance.
Men appear to be caring for their hair more than ever before with 17% sporting a coloured-do compared to 65% of women, and 55% of men wash their hair every day, compared to just 27% of women who are doing the same.

The survey asked respondents to rate the brands across six variables:
1. Value for money
2. Advice provided
3. Service quality
4. Customer service
5. Range of products
6. Overall satisfaction
This year, Just Cuts has taken out the award for customer satisfaction with their hairdressing chain, achieving 5-stars in many of the categories, says George.

Regional Breakouts (exceptions only)
Canterbury: Cantabrians are least likely to have dyed hair (41%).
Otago: Those in Otago are most likely to wash their hair daily (46%).
Bay of Plenty: Those in the Bay of Plenty are least likely to usually visit their hairdresser only when they start noticing split ends (16%), most likely to regularly use styling products in their hair (53%) and most likely (equal with Northland) to have dyed hair (67%).
Northland: Those in Northland are most likely to usually visit their hairdresser only when they start noticing split ends (40%) and most likely (equal with Bay of Plenty) to have dyed hair (67%).
Hawke’s Bay: Those in Hawke’s Bay are least likely to wash their hair daily (19%).
Taranaki: Those in Taranaki are least likely to regularly use styling products in their hair (24%).
