Gimblett Gravels® Syrah and Merlot triumph at Air New Zealand Wine Awards
The Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing District® cemented its position as New Zealand’s top spot for fuller bodied reds, collecting trophies for both Syrah and Merlot at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards last weekend.
Chairman of the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowers Association, Gordon Russell, was especially pleased to see both varietals triumph.
“This result confirms what we in the Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing District® have long felt; that the District can produce world class quality Bordeaux varieties and Syrah – marking it as a truly outstanding terroir.
Wine lovers can take assurance from the fact that Gimblett Gravels® wines have won a staggering 16 trophies and 37 gold medals this year alone.
These accolades have confirmed all of our hopes, and more. The unique gravelly soils, combined with the vision and commitment of our members, have created red wines which have achieved unprecedented awards from around the world.”
The Trophy winners are as follows:
Coast FM Champion Merlot Cabernets and Blends
Saint Clair Pioneer Block 17 Plateau Merlot Hawke’s Bay 2014
Nelson Airport Limited and Nelson Tasman Tourism Champion Exhibition Red Wine
Beach House Syrah Hawke’s Bay 2014
Further reinforcing Gimblett Gravels® performance was its dominance in the gold medals awarded to Merlot, Cabernet and Blends, scooping three of the five golds awarded.
Gordon Russell comments, “the Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing District® is proving itself for fuller bodied reds and is fast becoming the next big story in the world of wine.”
