Emissions trading review timely

Emissions trading review timely

BusinessNZ has welcomed the review of the New Zealand emissions trading scheme announced today.

BusinessNZ Chief Executive Phil O’Reilly said it was important that the settings of the emissions trading scheme continued to maintain the international competitiveness of New Zealand business.

“We would like to see the ETS settings calibrated within a wider review of the full range of measures that can be taken to help New Zealand meet and exceed its emission reduction target,” Mr O’Reilly said.

He said the review, with submissions due in February and April, was timely as it would be able to take account of outcomes from the climate change conference in Paris.

“We hope that an agreement in Paris will allow for a transparent assessment of the action being taken by others, in order to ensure that other countries’ effort is comparable to that of New Zealand.”
