Competition vital to telecommunications in New Zealand

InternetNZ strongly believes that enhancing competition in telecommunications is vital to seeing our national goals achieved. These views have been articulated in a submission on the Regulating Communications for the Future Discussion Document to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

InternetNZ Chief Executive Jordan Carter says InternetNZ stands for an open and competitive Internet.

“We believe that all New Zealanders should be able to share in the potential of the Internet to transform our economy and society,” said Carter.

“InternetNZ is pleased to see that this document communicates a vision from the Government that is closely aligned with our own. Ensuring competition in telecommunications and Internet services in New Zealand is a vital component in delivering this vision.

“Enhancing competition in telecommunications has already led to significant gains for New Zealand users. Our submission encourages the Government to continue enhancing competition in order to reap these benefits,” said Carter.

InternetNZ has long argued that such a comprehensive review of telecommunications legislation was required in New Zealand. However, for such a process to work in the best interests of all New Zealanders, it is vitally important to allow time for considered reflection and discussion between parties.

“The Government needs to ensure that this process continues collaboratively and inclusive of all the parties relevant to telecommunications and the Internet in New Zealand.

“We urge the Government to ensure that this submission process is but the start of this conversation. There remains a lot of work to be done and many perspectives to consider in order to get this right,” says Carter.
