Maori Television To Stay In Auckland
Māori Television will remain in Auckland, it has been decided by the Māori Television board.
The decision follows a number of comprehensive proposals from interested parties in Rotorua, Hamilton and Auckland. Board Chair Georgina te Heuheu says after careful consideration, a recommendation for Māori Television to remain in Auckland has been endorsed.
“The Board appreciated the number of quality proposals that came through from interested parties.
Financial considerations and the ability to attract and retain staff were the key factors in the Board’s decision,” says Ms te Heuheu.
Explaining the decision making process, Ms te Heuheu continues, “We needed to embark on a robust process and fully consider all factors to act in the best long-term interests of Māori Television. We believe this decision will be the most beneficial in supporting the organisation to realise its vision of revitalising te reo Māori”.
A number of potential sites in the Auckland area are under active consideration by the Board.
These include options in South Auckland, West Auckland and remaining at the current Newmarket premises. The existing lease is up for renewal in mid-2017.
“There is a rigorous decision-making process in place, taking into account proximity to Māori communities, retaining and attracting key talent, access to broadcasting and transportation infrastructure and ongoing financial impact,” she says.
A final decision on Māori Television’s future Auckland location is expected in early 2016.
