Competition fierce in Meridian Energy Southern Excellence Awards

Competition is fierce in Property Council South Island’s inaugural Meridian Energy Southern Excellence Awards.

A total of 42 nominations have been received, spanning seven categories – an impressive number for the inaugural event. South Island Branch president Jo McDonald says the Branch is thrilled by the response it has attracted.

“We are delighted with the quality of nominees. These are the people moving Christchurch along. They have rolled their sleeves up and are getting the job done.

“The Prendos Property Industry Associate of the Year award has attracted fantastic candidates. We have Stephen Cairns from Arrow International (NZ) Ltd who has been involved in industry for 30 years. Gordon Craig from Ngāi Tahu Property Ltd is also nominated and brings with him 30 years of experience.

“We also have posthumous nomination for Bob Robertson from Infinity Investment Group. Bob died suddenly last November and we want to pay tribute to him for leaving a lasting and influential contribution to South Island’s property development industry.”

The team behind the $45 million upgrade of the Remarkables Ski Field Base has been nominated for the PB Best Project Team award.

The work was undertaken by NZSki, Arrow International (NZ) Ltd, Michael Wyatt Architecture, Cosgroves and Aurecon.

“This is a significant project in the South Island. It increased the existing facility’s capacity by 40%, enabling the ski field to accommodate 3,500 skiers per day.”

Alex Cutler, chief executive of the Green Building Council who sits on the judging panel says she is impressed by the level of entries.

“The calibre of entries in the Meridian Energy Southern Excellence Awards demonstrates the broad talent that is central to the ongoing journey to a revitalised Christchurch.

“Taking time to celebrate the sheer hard work, dedication and success of those involved in the rebuild is a key part of acknowledging what has gone before. I’m delighted to support this.”

The Meridian Energy Southern Excellence Awards is the first event of its kind which celebrates South Island’s commercial property professionals, developers, investors, and managers for their commitment to the industry and the local economy. It has sold nearly 500 tickets is expected to become a fixture on South Island Branch’s event calendar.

The awards categories are:

• Greenwood Roche Young Achiever of the Year

• Kirk Roberts Consulting Engineers Award for Service

• The Buchan Group Urban Design & Architectural Merit Award

• WSP | PB Best Project Team Award

• Prendos Property Industry Associate of the Year Award

• Resene Outstanding Leadership Award

• Anderson Lloyd Judges Choice Award
