Director of local credit union recognised at industry awards ceremony
Director of locally based organisation Westforce Credit Union, Mary Martick, was honoured recently with an Individual Recognition Award at the industry awards dinner conducted by Co-op Money NZ, the association that represents 18 credit unions and mutual building societies around the country.
Mary was among four recipients who received the accolade at Co-op Money NZ’s Annual Gala Awards evening, on the 12th September 2015, at The Crowne Plaza Hotel, Auckland. Recipients of the awards were recognised for their valuable contribution to their credit union, the industry and local community.
Mary Martick first started working at Westforce Credit Union in 1979 as an unpaid volunteer. She then quickly rose to become Westforce’s first Director and was, until recently, General Manager for the organisation. Mary has put her heart and soul into creating and maintaining Westforce Credit Union. Mary remained as an unpaid volunteer for 10 years. She hasa long record of employing people off the benefit, giving them a chance to prove themselves in the workplace and at the same time teaching them to manage their finances.
Over the last 30 years she has led and motivated a team to create what Westforce Credit Union has now become.
The Co-op Money NZ dinner was attended by around 140 credit union board members and managers from all over New Zealand. It was preceded by the association’s Annual Conference 2015, which brought together senior managers in credit unions to discuss the changes in the sector and better ways to capitalise on these changes.
Independently owned and operated by their members for their members, credit unions and mutual building societies provide a wide range of financial services, like savings accounts, loans and insurance. Profits made by these organisations are returned to the members in a combination of ways, such as fairer fees and interest rates with community involvement.
