Design defines Auckland’s newest contemporary hot yoga studio
A world-class hot yoga studio that combines beautiful design and spa-like comfort has opened its doors in Auckland.
Studio Red, designed by award-winning Cheshire Architects, is one of the first local examples of a big-city trend towards contemporary yoga spaces that focus on design as well as increased comfort and hygiene.
Founder and hot yoga enthusiast Vicky Cullinane says the purpose-built studio, located in the bustling City Works Depot on Wellesley Street, has been designed to offer an enhanced experience that begins the moment a person steps through the doors.
“My brief to Nat and his team at Cheshire Architects was to create a modern sanctuary that felt more day-spa than fitness studio,” says Vicky.
Polished concrete floors, discrete lighting, beautifully appointed dressing rooms and two large, luxurious bathrooms create a boutique hotel-like ambience.
“We set out to create a yoga studio of great elegance and amenity,” says Nat Cheshire, whose practice is behind some of Auckland’s most celebrated urban transformations, including City Works Depot.
“We wanted a space defined by simple volumes, subtle textures and soft colour; a space whose sensuality sits in perfect tension with the industrialised vigour of the heritage depot in which it is housed.
“Huge glazed fire station doors give in to a series of tall, generous spaces. Materials are important – custom furniture is lined in soft linens, while the luxurious showers are lined with tiny, coloured glass mosaics, like those in the original wet areas of the depot,” he says.
The yoga area itself has been the main focus. It features fragrant cedar linings, the highest quality German mats, sophisticated temperature control systems and acoustic controls to maintain the peacefulness of the inner studio.
“A spacious, comfortable studio is also one that is properly ventilated,” says Vicky. “We prioritise cleanliness and hygiene, which is particularly important when hot yoga is being practiced.”
Vicky says Studio Red welcomes yoga enthusiasts of all levels, including absolute beginners.
The classes, taught by studio manager Erica Davis and her team of passionate teachers, incorporate Hatha, Vinyasa and Yin Yoga as well as a special class set to a fun and energetic playlist on Friday nights. Local and international guest teachers will also be invited to host special classes.
“Our open-level classes are perfect for those just starting out in yoga or for those who have been practicing for some time. The warm room means you can really stretch your body and the heat intensifies the workout to challenge you both physically and mentally.
“I look forward to welcoming clients into Studio Red so they can enjoy practicing with some of the best teachers in a beautiful environment that makes hot yoga that much more enjoyable,” says Vicky.
Studio Red offers six classes each weekday and five classes on both days of the weekend. It is located at City Works Depot, 15.5 90 Wellesley Street West.
