Little change in skilled job vacancies in August – MBIE Jobs Online Report
The number of skilled job vacancies advertised online fell by 0.1 per cent in August, while there was a 1.9 per cent rise across the year, according to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s (MBIE) latest Jobs Online report.
The slight fall was driven by decreases in three industries, the largest of which was in information technology (down 3.2 per cent). The construction and engineering industry saw a decrease of 0.3 per cent, with hospitality and tourism vacancies falling by 0.1 per cent over the past month.
The decreases were partially offset by increases in hospitality and tourism (up 2.3 per cent) and sales, retail and marketing (up 0.3 per cent).
Job vacancies in both professional and manager occupations fell 0.6 per cent in August, while the number of technician and trade worker vacancies increased by 2.1 per cent.
Of the 10 regions, seven experienced an increase in skilled vacancies. The Bay of Plenty saw the largest increase (up 1.2 per cent), followed by Otago/Southland and Waikato (both up 0.8 per cent).Wellington had the biggest fall in skilled vacancies (down 1.0 per cent).
Skilled vacancies in Canterbury fell by 0.6 per cent in August, and by 0.8 per cent over the year. Growth in the Canterbury construction sector has slowed over the past month and year, as the Canterbury rebuild reaches its peak.
MBIE’s Labour Market Trends Manager, David Paterson says, “There has been a levelling off in the number of vacancies across all regions, industries and occupations over the last few months, reflecting slower economic activity .”
