Let’s Get Auckland Moving says EMA

The joint announcement around central and local government working more closely in regards to resolving Auckland’s transport issues has been hailed as a step in the right direction by the Employers and Manufacturers Association (EMA).

However, the pressure for progress needs to be kept on, says Kim Campbell, CEO, EMA.

The Auckland Transport Alignment Project (ATAP) signals the start of a year-long process in which Auckland Council and the Government will agree strategic objectives and funding priorities for the city’s transport woes.

“It’s good to see Council and Government finally working together to line up transport projects with growth projections and measures to reduce congestion,” says Mr Campbell.

We’re also pleased to hear this will not delay projects already on the books such as the East/West link.

“However, let’s make sure we don’t lose sight of getting Auckland moving today.

“We know the city is struggling to cope with growth. Congestion is a major issue, and will only escalate with 7000 new cars being registered every month. Some of my members are effectively running warehouses on wheels as they try and move freight around the city.

“The compelling case for further spending on Auckland transport is evident every day for Auckland businesses and commuters.

“How does ATAP address the linkage between road, rail, sea and the airport?

“We want to see funding streams and timeframes for moving these vital projects along.

“Our members are deeply frustrated with the lack of progress on critical infrastructure development in Auckland.

Mr Campbell says now is the time to unlock Auckland’s economic development.
