Chevron New Zealand wins award for Community Driver Mentor Programme
The Deloitte Energy Excellence Awards recognise excellence and achievement across the electricity, oil, gas and petroleum industries
20 AUGUST, 2015, Auckland, NZ – Chevron New Zealand, through the Caltex brand, is delighted to be the 2015 recipient of the Deloitte Energy Excellence Award for the Community Initiative of the Year*, having demonstrated wide reaching benefits to both the organisation and community involved.
The initiative which is being run in Porirua by Partners Porirua, was first launched in 2014 by the NZ Transport Agency, the Automobile Association (AA) and Caltex. It is designed to give primarily young drivers crucial road skills and instilling safer driving habits. Regrettably it’s a programme that is desperately needed in New Zealand – with the national road toll already tracking well ahead of the same time last year at196** fatalities.
The programme is operating in Te Kuiti, Christchurch East, South Auckland, Gisborne and Northland and has seen more than 270 mentees go through the programme thanks to partnerships with local councils, the police and community groups.
Dean Gilbert, General Manager at Chevron says, “This programme is all about ensuring more Kiwis learn positive driving habits, such as overcoming risky impulses and attitudes, which will benefit them throughout their driving lives. Not only does it have the potential to save lives, it opens young people up to the opportunities that come attaining their restricted licence. It is a true partnership. The work that Partners Porirua undertake for the Porirua community on this programme is truly amazing. We applaud them for making such a difference.”
Caltex has contributed $100,000 to the two-year programme and is providing all the fuel for the lessons. The company is also encouraging its staff and franchise holders to train as mentors.
