Wellingtonians More Adventurous with Food
Wellington is certainly the creative capital of New Zealand – but how adventurous are Wellingtonians when it comes to trying new foods?
An independent survey commissioned by The Food Show, has revealed that Wellingtonians are more bold in their culinary choices than the rest of the country.
More than half of the capital’s population believe they are adventurous when it comes to trying new foods (compared with 43% nationally), which is backed by a statistic showing that Wellingtonians are significantly more likely to try a range of new and unusual foods than the national average, including 51% saying they’d eat offal, almost 20% saying they’d try insects and only 2% admitting they wouldn’t try any new or unusual foods (such as offal, caviar, sashimi, spicy food or insects).
Despite this affinity for adventurous eating, more than 84% tend to buy the same key items each time they do a grocery shop, and 96% still use supermarkets as the primary place to do the shopping.
When it comes to cooking, eating at home still comes out tops with 88% of Wellington residents eating at home 4 – 7 days per week, but the first choices have changed with a higher number eating Italian in the last month than a traditional roast dinner. Almost 30% had eaten organic in the last month, and 7.8% had eaten a Paleo meal. Surprisingly, more than 10% of respondents eat at home less than three days of the week.
The fairer sex are leading the scores, with Wellington women slightly more open to trying new foods than Wellington men (54.2% compared to 48.1%), and two thirds say buying locally produced foods is important to them.
Dona White, CEO of North Port Events, which runs The Wellington Food Show, is pleased to see Kiwis being open minded to trying new things.
“There are always lots of new culinary discoveries when we do a Food Show, and it’s wonderful to see that Wellingtonians are open to new food experiences.”
