Hawkins Secures another Iconic Auckland Waterfront Project

Hawkins Secures another Iconic Auckland Waterfront Project

Hawkins has been appointed as the contractor for a new street upgrade project in Wynyard Quarter.

The $18.6m project to revitalise Madden Street & Pakenham Street, has been awarded by the Council organisation responsible for the areas revitalisation, Waterfront Auckland. When completed, the project will see both streets transformed into pedestrian friendly boulevards that encourage slower vehicle speeds consistent with the rest of the Quarter.

With a similar design treatment to other streets already revitalised in the area, the Madden & Pakenham Project will involve a mixture of ground stabilisation, deep drainage, complex services and rain gardens - all topped off with high quality surface finishes, lighting, landscaping and street furniture.

Concurrent to these works, Hawkins continues to develop Halsey and Gaunt Street at the southern end of Wynyard Quarter. For Hawkins, the combined value of the concurrent work in the Quarter over the next 18 months will exceed $36m.

“We are excited about working with Waterfront Auckland again to deliver what will be another challenging but rewarding public realm project,” says Daniel Williams, Northern Regional Manager, Hawkins Infrastructure. “It’s great to deliver something tangible that we see being enjoyed by the wider Auckland community and our own family and friends.”

The Madden & Pakenham Project is one of the first infrastructure projects in New Zealand to be targeting a design and as-built rating from the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA). Another project seeking ISCA rating is the City Rail Link (CRL), a portion of which Hawkins is delivering in a joint venture with McConnell Dowell. These projects will be two of the first infrastructure projects in New Zealand to be targeting the comprehensive and much sought-after ISCA sustainability rating.

“We’re pleased to confirm Hawkins involvement in the project especially given their familiarity with Wynyard Quarter on other projects and the high profile and public nature of this space,” says Waterfront Auckland Project Director, Daniel Khong.

“It will not be without its challenges due to the complexity of staging the works and drainage requirements but we have full confidence they will help us deliver a project that will meet the same high level of urban design and amenity that the public have become to expect from this part of the Auckland waterfront.”

Work on the Madden & Pakenham Project is expected to be completed by the end of 2016
