Lack of funding holds Kiwis back from achieving their dreams

Leading life insurer and retirement savings provider, AMP, has revealed that the biggest obstacles to Kiwis aiming to achieve their dreams is a lack of funding (62%), not knowing where to start (33%) and fear (31%).

These findings come from an independent survey* as AMP launches its Scholarship programme for 2015 aiming to help talented, passionate and determined Kiwis who are ready to do their thing.

Jeff Ruscoe, Chief Customer Officer at AMP says: “It is a shame to hear people are missing out on achieving their dreams due a lack of funding, not knowing where to start and fear - as this is really holding people back. The reality is these are absolutely legitimate concerns when going outside the comfort zone; but with enough help, planning and sheer grit we know that many people can achieve their goals.

“Over the last 17 years, AMP has helped more than 160 Kiwis achieve their dreams, by providing $2 million worth of scholarships to everyday New Zealanders, providing them support and funding so they can do their thing and own their tomorrow,” continues Ruscoe.

The survey also revealed that New Zealanders are real go-getters and aren’t shy when it comes to putting that famous Kiwi “can-do” approach into action with 74% of respondents saying they have pursued a dream or significant goal (up by 5% on last year).

Incredibly, out of the respondents that had pursued a dream, nearly nine out of ten (88%) said their dream was successful. Most attributed this success to “perseverance and determination” (77%), “hard work” (67%), “time” (36%) and “family support” (33%) - demonstrating the resilient and hard-working nature of the Kiwi culture. Age was also no barrier, with three in four people (76%) saying a dream can be achieved at any age.

The survey findings certainly show that Kiwis aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves. In fact, the results also disclosed how selfless people are – with nearly three in five (59%) saying family members, friends (30%) and the wider public (27%) would also benefit from them achieving their dream.

“It’s not just about people realising dreams but having the support of friends and family – and AMP backing them all the way – it’s a team effort,” says Ruscoe.

When asked where they would go if they needed financial funding to pursue a dream, most respondents said a bank (59%), family (34%) or the government (23%). Three in four (76%) also said if they were given $10,000, which is what AMP Scholarship recipients receive, it would help them get their dream started.

Ruscoe concludes: “Overall the survey results show just how driven Kiwis are and we’d love to help even more people own their tomorrow through an AMP Scholarship. AMP Scholarships are aimed at people from all walks of life – plus almost anyone is eligible as there’s no age limit restrictions in place.
