Launch of a New Zealand Forest Policy Project
The New Zealand Institute of Forestry (NZIF) held its annual conference today at Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington, with President James Treadwell’s opening address introducing the Forest Policy Project.
The forestry sector is trying to put together an intergenerational forest policy for the greater good of New Zealand. “My hope is a clear policy will enable the governments of the day to clearly understand what the sector can offer, understand the long term nature of the sector and ensure any decision made is made with the sector and the long term policy in mind,” says James. The policy is not only looking at economic benefits, but also non-economic (environmental and social) benefits of forests.
The Policy is not just about production forests, it includes native forest estate, and the NZ Institute of Forestry is proud to help facilitate the Project and tailored this year’s conference around it.
In addition at this year’s conference, NZIF announced four new fellows at its AGM:
• Paul Nicholls
• Thomas Song
• Alan Bell
• Ian Armitage NZIF is pleased to announce their Forester of the Year at the Awards dinner - Dr Brian Richardson holds the role of General Manager, Forest Science at Scion. His research interests include sustainable forest management, vegetation management, and assessing the long-term productive capacity of forest sites. ENDS
