Facilities Management industry takes off in New Zealand
Demand for facilities management services in New Zealand is set to grow in the months ahead as companies continue to
outsource the management of their buildings and assets, says recruiting experts Hays Facilities Management.
Contract Managers, Facilities Managers and Facilities Coordinators are among the roles topping the list of skills in
demand in the Hays Quarterly Report for July to September 2015.
“Facilities management as an industry continues to grow in New Zealand. While it has always been a larger market
overseas, we have certainly noticed a recent change in the market with a far higher demand for skilled Facilities
Managers,” says Jason Walker, Managing Director of Hays in New Zealand.
“With building standards becoming more detailed, Facilities Managers with building compliance knowledge are sought. In
addition, Facilities Managers with a trade background are needed because employers value their knowledge and general
maintenance skills.
“Employers are also looking for mid level Facilities Co-ordinators. The private sector is most active in this area
following the movement of candidates within the market and also due to changes in the ownership of contracts, which have
led to restructuring. Vacancies in these areas are typically permanent.”
Contract management is another skill in demand in today’s market, according to the recruiter.
“A lot of available roles in contract management involve responsibility for both a portfolio of sites as well as
maintaining relationships between clients, tenants and contractors,” says Jason.
“This is where we are seeing a bridge between building management and facilities, and these roles require candidates
who can juggle different aspects of large sites, including preventative and planned maintenance as well as tenant
management.
“Candidates with experience in facilities management tend to be either former tradespeople with strong hard services
and technical skills, or corporate and great with systems reporting and invoicing. There are not many candidates who are
strong on both sides so those who can develop new skills will be well positioned to exploit future job opportunities as
they emerge.”
