Commission’s report on Christchurch Airport is another tick for pricing at major airports

The Commerce Commission’s final report into information disclosure by Christchurch Airport is another tick for pricing at the major airports, said Kevin Ward, Chief Executive of the New Zealand Airports Association (NZ Airports).

“The Commission has found Christchurch Airport’s targeted returns for the current pricing period, valid until 2017, are within an acceptable range. The current charges at all three major airports have now been thoroughly tested and found acceptable, said Mr Ward.

“Airports are committed to setting charges fairly, openly, and with a view to maintaining the essential infrastructure on which tourism, travel and trade depend.”

Improvements in the clarity of Christchurch Airport’s price setting approach have been acknowledged by the Commerce Commission.

“Looking to future price-setting, past 2017, prices have not been set, so can’t be commented on. However, travellers, airport users and the Commission can be assured that the demanding consultation processes and full disclosure to airlines, taken alongside the commitment to Commerce Commission requirements, will continue to deliver fair and reasonable charges.

“Information disclosure for airports has proven its effectiveness, and airports now look forward to a period of stability in economic regulation for the long term,” said Mr Ward.
