Chamber welcomes commitment to road network resilience
The Government’s emphasis on the resilience of the Wellington region’s roading network has been welcomed by the Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce.
Chief Executive John Milford says the floods of late last month were just a further reminder of just how fragile the transport network can be at times of extreme events, so the emphasis on resilience was essential.
“Business particularly welcomes the continuing progress on Transmission Gully and points further north.
“Not only will this work increase the resilience of the system but it will improve capacity, reliability and safety both for commuters and freight users right up to Levin. This work is a key part of our roading network and will boost the regional economy.
“It’s also pleasing to see that the further investigation of a Petone to Grenada road remains on the books. That road would potentially feed into Transmission Gully and would provide even further options in the network. It is absolutely vital that this project moves through the investigation phase to the decision and building phase quickly.
“It is also essential that further improvements take place on the Ngauranga to airport route, and we are pleased to see the Transport Agency’s commitment to work with the Regional Council, City Council and the community to resolve some of the outstanding issues that are holding up progress there.
“The Chamber remains concerned that a good outcome is achieved at the Basin Reserve. This is a bottleneck that affects the efficiency of the whole network.”
