What ACTUALLY goes into a McDonald’s beef patty?

Comedian Guy Montgomery answers Kiwis’ number one question about the McDonald’s menu

Auckland, New Zealand: Since launching Our Food, Your Questions in November 2013, McDonald’s New Zealand has received almost 4,000 questions from New Zealanders keen to find out more about the famous Macca’s menu. And the number one question is about what goes into the beef patties and how they are made.

Questions include: What percentage of beef is actually in a meat patty and is the beef bleached? Is “100% export quality New Zealand Beef” the name of your meat supplier? Is it true that you have mashed up eyes of a pig or cow? Do you use horse meat?

In the company’s latest behind-the-scenes video, comedian Guy Montgomery moonlights as the Patty Investigator Guy to answer a question from Josh in Tirau who asks: ‘What processes does a Macca’s beef patty actually go through before it is served to the customer?’ .

The video shows Guy following the process in reverse from the McDonald’s New Plymouth restaurant all the way to the beef patty supplier, ANZCO Foods in Waitara, Taranaki, uncovering the underwhelming truth about McDonald’s beef patties.

McDonald’s New Zealand’s Our Food, Your Questions project lead, Kim Bartlett, says: “It’s a serious question which deserves a serious answer. But we also wanted to give the response a light touch, so Guy went behind the scenes to answer Josh’s question.”

This new beef response follows a video which looks into whether McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets are made of pink goop. Since that video launched at the end of last year 562,000 New Zealanders have viewed it.

“The Our Food, Your Questions website has had 329,000 users visit it, with the average time spent on the site sitting at more than three minutes. We believe this shows scale and engagement in the programme, “ Bartlett added.

McDonald’s is committed to answering every question asked about the menu. To start a conversation with McDonald’s and to see the answers to date, head to www.mcdonalds.co.nz/yourquestions.
