Jetstar searches for ‘flightless’ Kiwis to fly for
the first time
• Jetstar research shows over 66,000 Kiwis over 18 have never flown[1]
• Flight of the Flightless Kiwi celebrates Jetstar’s domestic NZ birthday
• Kiwis to share their ‘first flight’ experience travelling from Auckland to Queenstown
Jetstar is searching for Kiwis who have never flown before and giving them the opportunity to take flight for the first time in celebration of the airline’s domestic birthday this week.
The country’s low fares airline today launched its Flight of the Flightless Kiwi campaign, which will give away sixty Auckland-Queenstown trips for two, to people flying for the very first time.
Grant Kerr, Head of Jetstar New Zealand, said that as part of the planning process for the celebration, the airline surveyed more than 1,000 New Zealanders to learn more about their travel habits.
“New Zealanders are enthusiastic travellers but, somewhat surprisingly, the research found the equivalent of more than 66,000 Kiwis over the age of 18 have never set foot on an aircraft.”
Respondents who had never flown cited a number of reasons why they hadn’t taken to the skies; 25% said flying was not relevant to their lifestyle while 64% said cost was a factor.
Mr Kerr said the Flight of the Flightless Kiwi promotion was a great way for Jetstar to celebrate its sixth domestic birthday and highlight its commitment to enabling more New Zealanders to fly more often.
“We wanted to encourage first time flyers to visit their own backyard and the Flight of the Flightless Kiwi trip, from Auckland to Queenstown, is the perfect opportunity to enable them to do so.
“That’s especially true for people living in the North Island, who appear to travel less between the two islands than their southern cousins.”
The research revealed that 97% of South Islanders surveyed had visited the North Island while just under 90% of North Islanders had taken a trip to the South Island.
Kiwis who want to fly, but have never had the chance before, are invited to nominate themselves, a friend or a family member to win a weekend trip to Queenstown, a destination that over 40% of Kiwis said in the survey was their ‘ultimate domestic destination’.
From today, people who want to be in the running to be on Jetstar’s Flight of the Flightless Kiwi can nominate themselves or their loved one by visiting www.Jetstarflyingkiwis.co.nz
Entries close 5pm Thursday 2nd July 2015.
