Spy Valley’s Envoy Scores Hat Trick at Wine Challenge

Spy Valley’s Envoy Scores Hat Trick at International Wine Challenge

New Zealand winery Spy Valley Wines is delighted to announce that they have been awarded a trifecta of trophies at the 2015 UK International Wine Challenge, for their 2012 Envoy Sauvignon Blanc. Trophies were announced on 18th May at the London Wine Fair.

“To win the trophy for the best ultra premium Sauvignon in the UK market is huge. It shows the vineyard and winery teams are right on the mark. It also gives us another reason to celebrate and provides confidence to our global market partners. “, Blair Gibbs, Spy Valley’s General Manager.

The International Wine Challenge (IWC) owned by William Reed Business Media is now in its 32nd year.

The IWC is accepted as the world's finest and most meticulously judged wine competition which assesses every wine blind and judges each for its faithfulness to style, region and vintage. Throughout the rigorous judging processes, each medal-winning wine is tasted on three separate occasions by at least 10 different judges and awards include medals (Trophy, Gold, Silver, Bronze) and Commended and Great Value awards.

The Spy Valley Envoy range of wines highlights unique micro-sites that consistently produce exceptional fruit from the family owned Vineyards around their Marlborough winery.

Paul Bourgeois, Spy Valley’s Chief Winemaker said “The Envoy range is all about sites selected to allow the wines to express their particular place in the world. Sauvignon Blanc is expressive by nature here in Marlborough, so we are fortunate to have a site that combines this with a more serious, age worthy character."

Spy Valley is the informal name for Marlborough’s Waihopai Valley, a southern sub region of the main Wairau Plains.   The name Spy Valley is derived from the Waihopai Satellite Communication Station (a spy base) which is part of the Echelon Global Network.  Established in 1993, this family, New Zealand owned company sources fruit predominantly from their own Johnson Estate Vineyards.  Pioneers of this Marlborough sub-region, the vineyards were established on land considered too poor for viticulture, but has since become one of the finest cool climate vineyards in the region. Consistently producing global award winning wines including Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir.

Spy Valley also had success in the UK last week winning two gold medals for Pinot Noir and a trophy for Pinot Gris food match at the Sommelier Wine Awards UK, reinforcing Spy Valley’s reputation as a leading New Zealand wine producer, with an international reputation.

“These wines highlight the continuing excellence of Marlborough and what can be achieved with a dedication to quality and great teamwork.” said Blair Gibbs.
