Now’s the time to safety check your home
Auckland, 15 May 2015 – Insurance claims for flood damage caused by yesterday’s weather bomb in Wellington are expected to rise after the next downpour, says AA Insurance.
Amelia Macandrew, Customer Relations Manager for AA Insurance, says the most common types of claims so far have been for flooding to homes, but there have also been a number of cars damaged.
“We’ve had rooms flooded with incoming water, water dripping through ceilings because of leaks in the roof, and cars with flooded interiors and engines. However, we expect to see an increase in claims over the next few days after more forecasted rain, and once people have accessed the damage to their property.
"If you need emergency repairs in order to keep your home watertight and warm please ring us as soon as you can. While there’s no deadline to make a claim, the sooner you let us know, the sooner we can help you.”
In the meantime, Wellingtonians are advised to try to grab the opportunity between downpours to get their house in order and prevent any new or additional flooding damage during the next couple of days.
“Now’s a good time to check your property – but only if it’s safe to do so,” said Amelia. “If you’re unable to lift furniture or wet carpet, ask a neighbour to help. The same applies to cleaning your gutter.
“Remember to always focus on your own safety first before attempting to look after your home or belongings. After all, they are often replaceable.”
Property
safety check for flooding:
· If there is water
in light fittings, turn your lights off and call an
electrician
· If it is safe to do so, place a
tarpaulin over any areas where the roof is leaking
·
If it is safe to do so, clear gutters and check for any
damage that could create flooding or leaking. Also check
seals around windows and doors that could let in water
·
If floors are wet, lift furniture to prevent staining
·
If possible, lift wet carpet to allow it to dry - don't use
a heater, as this may shrink the carpet
If your vehicle
has been damaged or suffered flooding it may be unsafe to
drive - please don’t drive unless you absolutely need
to
Don’t risk driving through water as its often
difficult to gauge how deep or fast moving it is
·
Keep your damaged items if you can or take photos – this
is useful to confirm what needs replacing
