Building consents on the rise

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment released the latest edition of the New Zealand Housing and Construction Quarterly today. The report shows an increase in the number of new building consents issued last year, with new dwelling consent numbers rising to their highest levels since 2007.

“24,717 new dwellings have been consented in New Zealand in the year ended December 2014. This is a stark contrast to the recession in 2007 when building consents were at their lowest at 13,236,” says Bryan Field, MBIE’s Manager of Modelling and Sector Trends.

“Growth in building consenting activity has been driven primarily by increases in Auckland and Christchurch. New dwelling consents in Greater Christchurch have had a year-on-year growth of 31.8%, Auckland has had a year-on-year growth of 21%,” says Mr Field.
