Chamber welcomes moves to simplify tax system
Moves towards simplifying and modernising the tax system have been welcomed by the Wellington Employers’ Chamber of
Commerce.
Revenue Minister Todd McClay today announced the first of two public consultations designed to modernise and simplify
the tax system, at a Chamber breakfast in Wellington.
Chief Executive John Milford says business is always in favour of anything that cuts red tape, and making the tax system
simpler and more convenient will do that.
“Anything that looks at making interaction with the tax system easier and less time-consuming would be welcomed with
open arms by business.
“Minister McClay is to be congratulated for pushing this work forward.
“The Chamber will be submitting on the proposals.
“We’ll be pushing for changes that will make life easier for businesses, and particularly small businesses which often
don’t have the resources to devote to some of the compliance presently required.
“When that happens they have to take time away from what they are good at to attend to tasks that could be made simpler
and faster.
“Businesses will also be looking closely at the options for simplifying the calculation of provisional tax, and at
integrating employers’ tax obligations into business processes.
“Time is money for all businesses, and if we can end up with electronic and online processes that make interactions with
Inland Revenue faster, more accurate, and more convenient then that will be good for us all.
“Change in some of those areas can’t come soon enough.”
