Climbing And Jumping From Cranes
The Crane association extends its condolences to the family of the young man that died this morning as a result of jumping from the floating crane Hikitia.
The Hikitia is the oldest floating crane in the world that still works and has been a focal point on the Wellington waterfront for many years.
With the opening up of the Wellington waterfront jump off spots, the Hikitia has become a target for young people out to prove themselves and todays accident is an example of when things go wrong.
The Crane Association condemns the use of the Hikitia as a jumping platform and would urge all who would attempt to jump to think about the consequences and jump from the established platforms along the waterfront specifically for that purpose.
In general climbing on cranes should not be attempted at any time by those not qualified to do so.
