Federated Farmers Exec wins Golden Lamb Award

Federated Farmers is thrilled one of their own has taken out this year’s Beef & Lamb Golden Lamb Awards.

Rick Powdrell, Federated Farmers Meat & Fibre Chairman says “Hamish Buchanan has outdone himself and should be incredibly proud of what he has achieved.”

“The Golden Lamb Awards is a challenging competition in its quest to find the highest yielding, most tender and tasty lamb in New Zealand. For our Tararua Meat & Fibre Chair to take that national title at such a young age is very impressive.”

“These awards follow stringent scientific testing to find the highest yield, tenderness, succulence and colour, with the final judges the taste buds of top chefs and celebrities at the Wanaka A & P Show, and Hamish’s Highlander Primera/Texel lambs were judged the tastiest of the lot.”

Hamish Buchanan runs a straight Terminal Sire Flock using a Highlander x Primera as the maternal Ewe, sourced for their reasonable price, good weights and genetic background.

“The Texel Sire provides hybrid vigour and additional muscling. To date it seems to be working well, we are producing what I think is a great product and its exciting to have that validated by such a high profile competition. The challenge in the next few years is to improve the lambing percentage we get from them.”

“There are still challenges ahead but it’s good to know we are doing some things right. The award encourages me to continue down the path we’ve taken with our flock, we have a few new ideas to work on that hopefully will deliver us even better results for the future.”

“New Zealand has a lot to thank the humble lamb for. It underpins much of our economy, providing jobs, schools, even the roads we drive on. This competition is a great way to celebrate it.”

Hamish finished by saying “Farming is a team sport, and I’d like to thank my parents, John & Sue, for giving me the opportunity to run the farms and try a few things that wouldn’t be deemed traditional, my wife Leanne for her support and understanding, Shane Tilson and Simon Beamish of Awapai Farms, Focus Genetics and David Burn of Kowhai Glen Texels for providing me a great quality sheep to work with.”
