Otago Polytechnic brings business excellence to Dunedin
Dunedin businesses will soon have the chance to hear from one of the world’s leading experts on business performance,
Sister Mary Jean Ryan, who will be sharing her wisdom at a Performance Excellence Briefing on 5 March. The event will be
hosted by Otago Polytechnic and Business Excellence NZ.
Sister Mary Jean Ryan, who holds the Harry S. Hertz Leadership Award, the highest US peer recognition award for
leadership in the US, will be delivering a briefing on how to use performance excellence criteria to transform the
results achieved by organisations.
Sister Mary Jean Ryan has been a Franciscan Sister of Mary for over 50 years, rising from her nursing role to serve as
President and CEO of SSM Health (SSMH) in the US, for 25 years. SSMH has 30,000 employees in 18 hospitals and 60
outpatient care sites spread across 4 US States. SSMH was the first health sector recipient of the US Malcolm Baldrige
Award for Excellence.
Sister Mary Jean Ryan’s leadership philosophy has resulted in numerous invitations to share her knowledge and expertise
with US and international organisations. She will be joined at the briefing by Dr Kevin Johnson, an expert in strategic
planning and performance excellence implementation.
“Having internationally recognised presenters of this calibre in Dunedin is truly inspiring and transformational,” says
Phil Ker, Chief Executive at Otago Polytechnic. “We’re committed to promoting and achieving business excellence. Otago
Polytechnic is proud to host the greatest minds in the field.”
The briefing is an initiative of Otago Polytechnic’s Education Foundation, which helps fund opportunities, innovations
and projects for students. Attendees at the event will learn from both speakers’ experience of ‘just doing it’, and gain
an increased understanding of how to implement the criteria for performance excellence.
Sister Mary Jean Ryan and Dr Kevin Johnson will deliver a three hour briefing session. Time will be allowed at the
briefing for questions and answers.
“This is a unique opportunity,” says Phil Ker. “These speakers have knowledge that can literally transform
organisations. We feel the business, health and community sectors in Dunedin could especially benefit from the
briefing.”
