Hawkins strengthens offshore drive, securing two geo-thermal power projects in Indonesia
As leaders in construction and infrastructure projects in New Zealand, in 2014 Hawkins’ international business embarked on an offshore strategy to transfer the knowledge and expertise they have built in New Zealand to developing countries around the world. Experienced team members’ specialist skills and knowledge are being successfully transferred to support developing communities in Papua New Guinea, Fiji and now Indonesia.
Lumut Balai and Karaha geothermal power stations, owned by state-owned Pertamina Geothermal Energy, are the latest projects to be secured by the Hawkins team, in joint venture with Indonesian partner Banguan Cipta Kontractor (BCK) to deliver the projects.
Hawkins has vast experience in delivering geothermal projects in New Zealand having successfully completed the Kawerau Geothermal Power Station, Ngatamariki Steamfield and Nga Awa Purua Geothermal Power Sta-tion.
Geoff Hunt, Hawkins Group CEO, says that the latest two international project awards further strengthen Haw-kins drive offshore to utilise the firms’ skills and knowledge in niche areas of expertise.
“We are utilising specialist knowledge and skills that we have developed on geothermal projects in New Zea-land, and partner with local contractors to best utilise combined expertise,” says Hunt.
Lumut Balai is located in South West Sumatra on a remote site some 1300m above sea level. Hawkins has been appointed to design, procure and construct the civil and building services work to the power plant plus the installation of all Toshiba supplied power plant equipment. The contract also includes the commission of all above ground steamfield activities. The project period is 24 months from January 2015.
The Karaha power plant, is located in West Java, 1200m above sea level and is also a design, procurement and construction services contract to house the Alstom supplied power plant equipment as well as commissioning all above ground steamfield activities. The project will last around 23 months from January 2015.
A number of New Zealand design consultants have been involved with the projects and Hawkins will look to continue involving specialist New Zealand suppliers and subcontractors where appropriate.
The latest two international contract awards for Hawkins support the already strong international drive for the firm.
In 2014 Hawkins began work on the Kookaburra Flyover and Roading project in Port Moresby. This is the first large scale flyover in Papua New Guinea and, indeed, in any Pacific Island country. Given that the road links to the international airport, it’s a great way to showcase PNG’s progress to international visitors. The project is re-sourced from a combination of local and international expertise, and project managed within strict and proven Hawkins QHSE guidelines.
Also in 2014, Hawkins and joint venture partner Pacific Building Solutions were selected to complete the Nadi International Airport Modernisation project. The project involves the demolition, construction, refurbishment and modernisation of the South Pacific’s most integral airport and is part of a large modernisation programme being implemented by the Fiji Government. This is the first large project in Fiji for Hawkins which has an im-pressive track record delivering airport projects throughout New Zealand.
