Volcanic activity in Tonga

Air New Zealand advises that ongoing volcanic activity in Tonga has caused the cancellation of some services between New Zealand and Tonga.

Flight NZ970 operating between Auckland and Nukualofa yesterday was diverted to Samoa and later returned to Auckland. As a result the return leg – flight NZ973 – from Nukualofa to Auckland was also cancelled.

An additional return service was due to operate today to re-accommodate these passengers but this has unfortunately since been cancelled due to conditions in Tonga. Today’s scheduled return service NZ970 Auckland – Tonga and NZ973 Tonga – Auckland has also been cancelled.

The airline has scheduled additional services later in the week in order to re-accommodate affected customers (subject to conditions improving) and is offering travel flexibility for customers ticketed up to and including Monday 12 January, for travel to or from Tonga between now and Sunday 18 January 2014.

Affected customers are advised to contact our Contact Centre on 0800 737 000 in New Zealand or 616 23 192 or +64 9 357 3000 in Tonga for details of this additional flexibility or for other assistance.

The airline apologises for the disruption and will continue to monitor the situation closely. The volcanic conditions in Tonga are not currently affecting Air New Zealand services to other destinations.
