Job hunters warned to be patient
People considering a job change in the new year need to be realistic about how long the process might take.
Traditionally the holiday season is a time when many people take stock of their careers and consider whether it is time to look for something new.
The Recruitment and Consulting Services Association (RCSA) says people who do decide they are ready for a change should start looking as soon as possible.
“It can very disheartening to begin the new year determined to make a change, to find that the job market is not offering any roles you might want to apply for,” says the RCSA’s New Zealand Region Council Chair Paul Robinson.
“Generally, it can be about two to three months between someone deciding they want to make a change and finding a role that interests them.”
Paul Robinson says when a person becomes demotivated it impacts negatively on their job performance, which can make them less attractive to prospective employers.
“My advice to anyone considering a change in the New Year is to be realistic, always be on the lookout for opportunities, and treat your current job as if it was a trial for your next job.”
The RCSA is the leading industry and professional body for the recruitment and human resources services sector in Australia and New Zealand. It represents over 3,300 company and individual members.
