Whanganui October Guest Nights Increase More than National Average

October 2014 commercial accommodation statistics were released last week with percentage increases higher than the national average. This follows Whanganui’s strong trend to date leading in to summer.

Figures released by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment show total visitor nights increased by 22.1% when comparing October 2013 to 2014. The total number of guest nights for Whanganui recorded in October 2014 was 16,157 and will include tourists, event attendees and participants and conferences. The same month comparison for all of New Zealand showed a 7.3% increase in visitor nights.

Looking at the moving annual total for the year ending October 2014 gives a longer term interpretation and provides insights into visitor trends for Whanganui.

An additional 17,252 Kiwis came to Whanganui over the last 12 month period giving an increase of 13.3% on 2013. The total increase of visitors for the same period, domestic and international, provide an increase of 6.7% on the previous year. When compared to total New Zealand visitors for the same period, Whanganui shows an increasing rate of growth above the national average. For the year ended October 2014 the average national percentage increase was 5.5%, lower by 1.2% than Whanganui.
