Retail NZ Welcomes Spending News

Retail NZ Welcomes Spending News

Retail NZ has welcomed news from Paymark that consumer spending has increased by 4.3 per cent in the first two weeks of December, compared to the same period last year.

“Most retailers have had a slow start to December, but with 10 days before Christmas, it’s good news that spending is starting to pick up,” Retail NZ Chief Executive Mark Johnston said today.

“The slow December to date is likely the result of bad weather around the country, economic uncertainty around future dairy payouts and increasing numbers of New Zealanders shopping on offshore websites. As the weather hopefully improves around the country over the next 10 days, we’re increasingly expecting a last-minute surge in sales as people complete their Christmas shopping.

“I’m encouraging everyone to beat the rush and get their shopping wrapped up now, as well as to buy from local websites and shops over the next 10 days. For those needing inspiration, Retail NZ’s #BuyNZXmas campaign has some great gift suggestions for hard to reach friends and relations.
