New Jetstar Gold Coast service touches down in Wellington

Jetstar has linked the capital to the Gold Coast today with the airline’s first ever international Wellington service touching down this afternoon ahead of the festive holidays and peak summer travel season.

Today’s inaugural Gold Coast-Wellington flight marked the first time in more than 10 years that a new airline has started year-round international services to the capital.

The low fares airline will operate three flights a week between Wellington and the Gold Coast on Friday, Sunday and Wednesday.

Grant Kerr, Jetstar head of New Zealand, said there had been a very positive response to the new services.

“Jetstar’s goal is to grow aviation markets by offering lower fares and since early September, when we started selling seats on this service, we’ve seen steady demand on both sides of the Tasman,” Mr Kerr said.

“It’s clear that Gold Coast residents are as keen to visit our capital as Wellingtonians are to explore the coast’s world famous surfing beaches and theme parks.”

Passengers on today’s inaugural flight from the Gold Coast were provided with the traditional water arch welcome for the aircraft after it landed at Wellington Airport.

Wellington is Jetstar’s fourth international destination in New Zealand with trans-Tasman services also offered from Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown. The airline has been flying domestically between Wellington and Auckland and Christchurch for more than five years.

Jetstar will launch another new trans-Tasman service tomorrow when flights begin between the Gold Coast and Queenstown.

With the new services Jetstar will have more flights from New Zealand to the Gold Coast than any other trans-Tasman airline, with up to 18 flights a week from four New Zealand destinations

Flights on both new Tasman routes will be operated by 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft in a single class.
