Michael Hill Doubles Footprint in Takapuna


Michael Hill Jewellers is doubling its footprint in the centre of Takapuna.

Founder Sir Michael Hill and Michael Hill International CEO, Mike Parsell will officially open the refurbished store on Thursday 4th December at 3pm.

Mike Parsell who grew up in the Bay of Islands was the Takapuna store’s second manager in the early 1980s. He joined the company in 1981, and following a number of senior management roles was appointed Michael Hill International CEO, in 2000. He made his mark early in his career, driving an increase in revenue from $500,000 to nearly $3 million at the Takapuna store, in three short years.

“I have very fond memories of my time as manager at the Takapuna store. Michael Hill Jewellers has a long history in Takapuna, it was the third store Sir Michael Hill opened. We‘re very excited to take this opportunity to renew our commitment to the area, and be part of the revitalisation of the Hurstmere Road precinct.

“Doubling the size of the store enables us to showcase the Michael Hill brand fully and significantly expand the range of diamond rings and fine jewellery for our clients.”

The new-look store moves next door to the site it occupied for over 30 years, taking up a prominent position on the corner of Hurstmere Road and The Strand. Founded in Whangarei in 1979, Michael Hill Jewellers has over 2,500 employees worldwide.

“Takapuna services a diverse market and has always been a unique store. The store’s clientele has and continues to include some of the country’s most prominent business people. Since it opened in 1983 the store has sold some of the most unique and expensive jewels in the history of Michael Hill Jewellers, including several diamonds weighing in excess of 10 carats including a 12.5 carat round brilliant cut diamond and an 11 carat marquise cut diamond,” says Mike Parsell.

In the last 12 months, the company has seen sales in New Zealand rise 11.5% to $99.4 million. Overall, Michael Hill International’s financial results released in July, showed the largest annual sales increase for the group in three years. The company recorded a 9.7% increase in total sales of $482.9 million in the 12 months ended 30 June, up from $440 million in 2013.

The company currently has 252 stores across New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the US.
