2014 SPORT NEW ZEALAND SIR TERRY
McLEAN NATIONAL SPORTS JOURNALISM AWARDS WINNERS ANNOUNCED
New Zealand’s top sports journalists and
photographers were recognised at the 2014 Sir Terry McLean
National Sports Journalism Awards dinner in Auckland last
night.
New Zealand Herald sports editor Dylan Cleaver cleaned up the print and online award categories and was named the CBL Insurance Supreme Sports Journalist of the Year.
Andrew Cornaga of Photosport was judged best
photographer, his photo of Val Adams putting the shot to win
gold at Glasgow considered the best of the year.
The Sir
John Wells Sport New Zealand Journalism Scholarships, were
awarded this year to Adam Cooper of Radio Sport and Daniel
Silverton of Times Newspapers Howick. It provides two young
journalists the opportunity to spend time in Wellington and
Auckland with key sports leaders and organisations to gain a
wider understanding of sports governance in New Zealand.
The Sport New Zealand Lifetime Contribution to Sport through
Journalism Award was awarded to radio and television
broadcaster John McBeth, one of New Zealand’s most
respected broadcasters who has been a commentator and
presenter at three Olympic Games, three Commonwealth Games,
three Americas Cup regattas and three Rugby World Cups, as
well as numerous other sporting events.
Anendra Singh of Hawkes Bay Today was selected as the Best Provincial Sports Journalist and also awarded the Garry Frew Memorial Trophy for Outstanding Contribution to Provincial Sports Journalism.
NZSJA Chairman Richard Becht, a former print
and TV journalist and now Warriors PR man, and former TV
Director and Producer Graham Veitch were made Life Members
of the Association.
These were the 34th NZSJA awards,
the 20th under the patronage of Sport New Zealand, and the
14th year they have been known as the Sir Terry McLean
National Sports Journalism Awards.
The Awards,
sponsored by Sport New Zealand attracted around 200 past and
present media and sporting celebrities. Special guests for
the evening were Empire and Commonwealth Games medalists
past and present. These included ’54 Vancouver gold
medalist Yvette Corlett (Williams), ’66 gold medallist Roy
Williams, and Christchurch ’74 medalists Dick Tayler,
Jaynie Hudgell (Parkhouse), Tony Ebert, Kerry Clark and
Bevan Smith.
Medalists and athletes from this year’s
Games in Glasgow were also on hand, including gold medalists
Sally Johnston, Tracey Lambrechs and Richie Patterson.
