Airways expands training simulator portfolio

Airways New Zealand has increased its number of Total Control training simulators in preparation for a new group of air traffic control trainees from Hong Kong.

The students, from HKIA Staff Services Ltd (HKIASSL), started their ab initio training with Airways last week. The students will also complete a private pilot’s licence qualification, which is a requirement for air traffic controllers in Hong Kong.

Sharon Cooke, Airways’ Head of Training, says the increased demand for Airways simulators around the world has enabled the organisation to build a new aerodrome simulator for the incoming students.

“We’re pleased to be able to offer these students the opportunity to undertake their studies on the latest technology, which will provide them with a level of realism equivalent to the ATC environment they will eventually work in,” she says.

“Total Control offers unparalleled realism and sophisticated, real-world simulation which ensures our students thrive in their studies,” says Ms Cooke.

Airways’ Total Control simulators are used in aviation universities and training institutions around the world including United Arab Emirates, Puerto Rico and China.

“This new simulator represents our commitment to improving our training technologies and developing state-of-the-art, high quality products for both our local and our international markets,” says Ms Cooke.

The HKIASSL students were selected earlier this year through Airways’ SureSelect recruitment methodology. SureSelect is a competency-based programme developed by Airways and used by HKIASSL to enhance its annual air traffic controller selection process.

“SureSelect identifies the right people, with the right skills, in the right environment, saving HKIASSL both time and money by outsourcing ATC candidate selection to Airways,” says Ms Cooke.
