Preferential Vote Results for Waikato-Tainui Confirmed

Results of a referendum to identify a preferred Governance and Representation structure for Waikato-Tainui have been confirmed.

Voting closed on 29 October 2014 and a final count of votes was concluded yesterday (3 November 2014). Final results of the preferential vote are:

72.05% Marae Model
5,559 Total votes received

The final count indicated that 12.86 percent of eligible voters named on the tribal register and aged 18 years and older voted. Of the approximately 55,000 election packs distributed, nearly 12,000 were returned due to invalid addresses.

In accordance with the tribe’s governing rules, a final decision on a new model will be made by its representation body, Te Kauhanganui, on 23 November 2014.

A transition management team will be formed to undertake the implementation required for the adoption of a new model. Implementation will commence following the Te Kauhanganui decision on 23 November 2014 and the new structure will begin following the tribal triennial elections in February 2015.
