Applications open for the inaugural Emerson’s Brewery JP Dufour Scholarship

Tertiary students undertaking a project within the brewing industry are invited to apply for the inaugural Emerson’s Brewery JP Dufour Scholarship.

Announcing the Scholarship, Emerson’s Brewery founder, Richard Emerson said the company was delighted to honour the late Professor Jean-Pierre Dufour’s contribution to craft brewing industry and his valued relationship with Emerson’s Brewery.

“JP was drawn to people with passion for what they did and was generous with his experience.

His expertise and great sensory skill were invaluable to me.

It’s wonderful that we can draw upon his legacy to support and inspire a new generation of craft brewers ensuring the industry continues to evolve.”

Belgium-born Jean-Pierre, affectionately known as ‘JP’, was appointed Professor, Chair of Food Science, at the University of Otago in 1995, he had a passion for beer, especially his beloved Belgian ales.

In memory of Jean-Pierre Emerson’s Brewery releases a Belgian-style ale every 2 June, the anniversary of his birthday.

Simply labelled ‘JP’ the beer must be of a quality and style that the brewery would be proud to serve Jean-Pierre.

Since the inaugural release of the ‘JP’ in 2007 Emerson’s has placed funds from its sales in trust to support the Emerson’s Brewery JP Dufour Scholarship.

To apply for the Scholarship students must be undertaking a degree in Dunedin that incorporates research, a dissertation or a thesis related to the technical, social or economic issues associated with the brewing industry.

Worth up to $3,500 for the recipient, students have until Friday 31 October to apply.
