New partnership takes shape to invest in local directors

The Institute of Director’s Waikato branch has welcomed the University of Waikato’s Management School as its most recent sponsor.

The arrangement will see more support for professional directors to develop and enhance their governance skills and add value to the Waikato region.

Chairman of the Waikato branch of the Institute of Directors (IoD), Margaret Devlin, said the IoD was delighted to have the Management School come on board and join a number of other Waikato business sponsors.

“Given our focus both at local and national level of ongoing professional development for directors, particularly with the launch of the Chartered Director pathway, the Waikato Management School is a natural choice as a branch sponsor,” said Devlin.

The agreement will see additional support for the IoD’s events and workshops, and further collaboration to up-skill directors with the broad range of senior management competencies.

Director of Corporate and External Relations at the University of Waikato’s Management School, Andrew Buchanan-Smart, said the University has a good relationship with the IoD and its recent commitment is just one of the ways to ensure those in governance are supported to govern effectively.

“Our arrangement is good for both parties,” said Buchanan-Smart. “The University’s focus is on research, teaching and engaging with the community, and this is an important way for the Waikato Management School to engage with the Waikato business community,” he said.

“We recently collaborated with the Institute to develop the Postgraduate Certificate in Governance and Leadership, which contributes to the IoD’s Continuing Professional Development programme, and I think the partnership will open up many opportunities for us to work together to grow and develop directors in the Waikato in the future.”

Devlin said the Waikato branch of the IoD runs an active engagement programme, ranging from networking events to governance scholarships to mentoring and training programmes. But it would not be able to offer these services without the support of its sponsors.

“We are very grateful for this ongoing support to continue building and growing the governance capability in the region, and that our branch maintains its flagship role in the national body,” she said.
