NZ Eco Fashion to showcase at Undress Brisbane
Three NZ eco fashion designers will showcase their collections at the upcoming Undress Runways event in Brisbane on
October 11.
Senorita AweSUMO and Melanie Child of Dunedin, and HIX of Wellington have been selected to runway alongside other
Australian emerging and established designers at Australia’s largest sustainable fashion event Undress Brisbane.
Senorita AweSUMO, a zero waste lifestyle brand will present Basix - a range of garments that can be made from reclaimed
or repurposed fabric, and brings together Senorita AweSUMO's key beliefs of waste reduction with easy to wear original
designs. The collection can be manufactured through the current fashion system, and utilises draping techniques, zero
waste pattern making, pre – consumer waste and found fabrics.
Melanie Child is a high end upcycled clothing label dedicated to the creative redesign of pre-loved clothing, with the
underlying inspiration for the label coming from a simultaneous aversion and fascination with mass production and its
by-products. Melanie’s collection entitled ‘Inertia’ is constructed entirely from existing garments such as shirts,
jeans, men’s tailored jackets and tshirts and is a reference to the current state of the fashion industry and the
unsustainable practises of the fast fashion cycle.
Anna Hicks of HIX is a fashion textile artist and will be showcasing her graduate collection Metamorphostitch. The
concept for her collection was to use traditional and contemporary hand craft tehcniques as a way of opposing the fast
fashion system whilst also challenging stereotypical views of craft as a domestic hobby. Using all second hand materials
with a focus on wool, her collection uses exausht dye techniques to achieve bright colours and bold shapes resulting in
a decorative, sustainable and thought provoking collection.
The three designers also runwayed at the recent NZ Eco Fashion Exposed in Lower Hutt in July of this year.
Undress Runways will take place on Saturday, 11 October 2014 from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM (AEST) in West End, QLD
