An improved focus on the Maori economy

Northland Inc has appointed George Riley to the newly created position of GM, Maori Economic Development. The role reinforces an improved focus on growing the Northland Maori economy with a view to generating sustainable employment and increased prosperity.

Northland Inc. CEO, David Wilson said “this is an exciting time for Northland with Maori gearing up for development, and organisations like Northland Inc. looking to partner and find ways to create new jobs and investment opportunities.”

The new role was co-designed by Northland Inc and the Taitokerau Iwi Chief Executives Consortium, to maximize shared gains through collaboration. As part of his new role George will work with the Consortium to implement the ‘Economic Growth Strategy for the Taitokerau Maori Economy – He Tangata, He Whenua, He Oranga’. This will include leveraging synergies with the ‘Northland Regional Growth Study’ currently being undertaken by the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment, the Ministry of Primary Industries and Northland Inc.

Te Runanga o Te Rarawa CEO, Kevin Robinson said “over the last decade, the Consortium has provided collective Iwi leadership across a range of social sector imperatives. Moving forward, it’s time to ‘change the conversation’ and we will apply that same Iwi leadership to growing the Maori economy for the benefit of Taitokerau whanau whanui. The establishment of the new GM role is a positive indication that Northland Inc. is keen to take that journey with us.”

George has a strong background of providing commercial leadership in Iwi corporate, hapu and whanau positions. With a BSc from Massey University, George will put his background as an Iwi CEO, Hapu Trustee, Secondary School Teacher and Fishery Surveillance Officer to good use when considering the cultural, environmental and social imperatives associated with growing the Maori economy. His involvement in Leadership NZ and other regional and national collaborations will hold him in good stead as he navigates the complex landscape of the Maori economy.

I look forward to working with a diverse range of groups to provide independent assessment, advice and assistance across various economic activities.”
