EPA hazardous substances poster wins award in San Francisco
A poster presented by two members of the hazardous substances applications team from the Environmental Protection
Authority (EPA) won first equal at an international conference held in San Francisco.
Two EPA staff attended the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) International Congress of Pesticide Chemistry in San Francisco last month. The congress is held every four years and aims to bring together industry, researchers and
regulators from around the world to cover a range of topics including emerging global issues and challenges, new
pesticide technologies, ecosystem and human exposure risk assessment, environmental fate and metabolism, outreach and
promoting public health.
EPA staff presented three posters at the conference. One of the posters entitled Teaming up with grower groups for better safety information won first equal in the stewardship, regulation and outreach section of the congress.
“We’re delighted to have received this award,” says Rob Forlong, Chief Executive of the EPA. “We’re committed to
increasing awareness about using hazardous substances safely and to gain international recognition at this level is
really encouraging.”
The Judges commented that the subject matter in the poster and its presentation made it one of the best of the more than
800 posters presented at the conference. The poster was evaluated on the technical quality, importance to the relevant
scientific field, presentation, clarity and originality of the presented research.
The EPA worked in partnership with key players in the agrichemical industry, rural supply stores and WorkSafe New
Zealand to develop and disseminate the safety campaign presented in the poster.
