Business-friendly policies must be a priority

New government must make kiwi business-friendly policies a priority
The Motel Association of NZ (MANZ) congratulates the National Party for its overwhelming victory in the general election and is calling on the new government to make sure they pursue policies which support small businesses: the lifeblood of our economy.
New Zealand’s economic recovery has been very much led by the Christchurch rebuild and the dairy sector, with many smaller businesses still struggling after the global downturn, MANZ Chief Executive Michael Baines says.
“John Key has told us that we are on the cusp of something special. The best way to make sure that the economic good times are shared by all is to help our small businesses thrive,” Mr Baines says.
“Like many small businesses, motels are struggling under the weight of increasing red tape, much of it levied by greedy monopolies in the form of local authorities. We are also facing a threat from B and holiday homes who are under-taxed and unregulated.”
Rather than rely on big business to propel us towards a stronger economy, the new National-led Government should look at creating a better environment for small businesses, as this is one of the best ways to ensure a strong economy is enjoyed by all.
“Unlike most big business which make profits to line the pockets of offshore shareholders, small business profits are virtually always invested back into their local community,” Mr Baines says.
“The majority of businesses in New Zealand are in the small to medium category and it is through supporting them that we will see real, sustained economic progress.”
“So come on Prime Minister, give us a fair go so we can do our bit to build better and more successful communities.”
