NZ Energy Quarterly Shows Renewable Electricity Generation Continues to Rise
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) today published the June quarter 2014 edition of the New
Zealand Energy Quarterly.
The report, which contains MBIE’s latest data and analysis of energy supply and demand, shows renewable electricity
generation increased to 78% of New Zealand’s electricity.
This included an increase in geothermal generation of 18% compared to the June quarter 2013, reflecting increased
investment in geothermal capacity.
On average, the electricity price paid by New Zealand households rose 2.0% compared with the June quarter 2013, driven
by the lines charge increases that came into effect from April 2014. The increase in lines charges, which cover both
transmission and distribution, was offset by a slight reduction (around -0.7%) in energy and retail costs.
Diesel demand continued to increase, reflecting increased economic activity.
“In the June quarter 2014, diesel consumption was at 51,900 barrels per day; about 2,000 barrels per day more than the
June quarter 2013,” says Bryan Field, MBIE’s Manager of Modelling & Sector Trends.
