August 2014 Monthly traffic update
1.0%International passenger volumes (excluding transit passengers) were 1.0% higher in August 2014 than the previous year.
Winter holiday travel continued to drive growth with Pacific Island routes up 4.4% and travel to Hawaii up 9.1%. South
America travel increased by 39.3%, including 2,000 extra transit passengers, with LAN Airlines now flying daily services
to Santiago.3.8%New Zealand residents travelled on 1.80 million overseas trips in the August 2014 year, up 3.8%. Around 40% of these
trips were to Australia. The next most-visited destinations were United States and Fiji, with further growth expected
from Air New Zealand’s planned capacity increases in 2015, comprising 16,000 seasonal seats to Nadi, 6,600 new seats to
Vancouver and 56,000 additional seats to Los Angeles including retimed connections to the East Coast.
26.1%International passenger volumes at Queenstown Airport were 26.1% higher in August 2014 than the previous year. There
were 36.7% more trans-Tasman flights in August 2014 than the previous year, driven by significant capacity increases due
to strong ski season demand. Jetstar has also announced it will fly three weekly direct flights to Gold Coast from
mid-December.68.7%Visitor arrivals from India were up 68.7% in August 2014 compared to the previous year. Recently we have seen impressive
growth from the Indian market with visitor arrivals to Auckland up 19.2% for the 12 month period ending August 2014 and
up 50.0% financial YTD.
