Matakina Technology in Move to Larger Offices
WELLINGTON, 18 September 2014 – Breast screening software developer Matakina Technology officially opened their new
Wellington offices on Tuesday.
British High Commissioner to New Zealand, Jonathan Sinclair, cut the opening ribbon saying, “Since I arrived in
Wellington, I have been struck by the depth, strength and diversity of links between New Zealand and the UK, both
bilaterally and in partnership in other countries. Matakina is emblematic of those ties: a truly global company - seeded
in the UK, based in New Zealand and now servicing the world.”
Serial medtech entrepreneur Professor Sir Michael Brady from Oxford University is a founder in Matakina and is visiting
New Zealand as a speaker at MORGO in Waitangi. Presenting at the opening he said, “Breast screening using mammography is
proven to save lives, however, it is not perfect, especially for women with extremely dense breasts.
“The breast density story is leading to a global revolution in breast screening that is saving lives and reducing costs.
Volpara is ensuring cancers are detected early, thus reducing treatment costs, whilst also ensuring that only women that
need additional imaging actually receive it.”
Matakina’s flagship product VolparaDensity is used by radiologists to objectively assess density from both digital
mammography and tomosynthesis (3D mammography) images to help doctors evaluate who might benefit from additional
screening. In the US, 19 states have breast density notification laws, and a federal bill to notify all women of their
mammographic density is in congress.
Matakina is currently seeking $5 million capital in an investment round to expand sales and marketing.
The company says that national screening trials are underway in the Netherlands, Norway, Ireland, UK, Germany and
Belgium, and will be able to announce several more soon.
