Latest Jobs Online report released
Skilled job vacancies advertised online dropped 0.4 per cent in August, according to the latest Ministry of Business,
Innovation and Employment’s Jobs Online report.
In the previous year skilled vacancies advertised online increased by six per cent.
The drop in skilled vacancies in August was driven by decreases in the construction and engineering, and sales, retail,
marketing and advertising industries, down 2.3 and 0.3 per cent respectively.
Over the past month, skilled vacancies grew in seven of the ten regions across New Zealand. The biggest increase was
seen in the Otago/Southland region (up 2.4 per cent) followed by the Gisborne/Hawke’s Bay region (up 1.4 per cent). The
Canterbury region grew modestly by 0.7 per cent.
Over the past year, skilled job vacancies increased in most industry groups. The biggest increase was in the hospitality
and tourism industry (up 21.6 per cent). The increase in hospitality and tourism was consistent with the upward trend in
guest nights for the year to July 2014. The construction and engineering industry also showed an increase (up 10.7 per
cent). The only decrease was in the healthcare and medical industry (down by 8.5 per cent).
The Ministry’s Labour Market and Business Performance Manager David Paterson says despite the levelling out in the
demand for skilled workers in Canterbury there is still significant construction work required for the Canterbury
rebuild.
